PNG mobile tower sharing is underway, with telecommunications operators voluntarily using shared infrastructure to reduce network costs.
In an update published on 23 October 2026, the Department of Information and Communications Technology reported that NICTA welcomed the cooperation.
Why share mobile towers?
NICTA said PNG’s difficult terrain, scattered population and infrastructure expenses make network expansion costly.
Sharing facilities could reduce duplicate spending and allow operators to direct more resources towards improving networks or reaching underserved communities.
The regulator also encouraged operators to explore sharing sites, shelters, power systems and other equipment where practical.
What could this mean for customers?
NICTA said the arrangements could support wider coverage, better service quality and more affordable telecommunications.
However, the update did not name the operators involved, identify the locations or state how many towers are being shared. It therefore does not confirm that reception or prices have changed in any particular community.
Competition still matters
NICTA said sharing arrangements should be fair and reasonable while preserving competition. The regulator will monitor them to protect consumers.
What PNG businesses should watch
For a small business, a useful improvement would be a connection reliable enough to handle customer enquiries, receive orders and access online services.
WebsoftPNG’s view is that customers should judge progress by actual local results. Before changing providers, test reception where you work and compare available packages.
Tower sharing is a promising step, but the practical outcome will depend on where investment happens and how services perform.
