PNG Government AI Adoption: Agencies Prepare

PNG government AI adoption is moving forward, with public agencies being asked to prepare for the gradual introduction of artificial intelligence.

In an announcement published on 29 October 2026, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said the approach aims to improve productivity, transparency and public service delivery.

An AI platform is being piloted

Chief Secretary Ambassador Ivan Pomaleu said the Prime Minister’s Department is piloting GovAoS, an AI productivity platform.

DICT also said it will support agencies through technical guidance and coordination with Digital Transformation Officers.

Policy work continues

The department reported that it has finalised a draft National Artificial Intelligence and Digital Transformation Strategy and the Government AI Adoption Framework. Work on a National AI Policy is continuing.

The announcement describes preparations and a pilot. It does not establish that AI services are already operating across all government agencies.

What this could mean for PNG

For citizens, the practical test will be whether these efforts make public services easier to access and more reliable.

For example, a useful future application could help staff organise routine enquiries. However, any such use should be assessed before deployment, with people checking its accuracy and handling sensitive information carefully.

These are possible applications and editorial considerations, rather than confirmed features of GovAoS.

What to watch next

Future updates should explain which services will use AI, how results will be measured and what safeguards will protect citizens’ information.
